Celebrating the Past, Present and Future of British and Irish Practical Theology

February 25, 2021 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

BIAPT invites you to join a celebration and conversation, focused on the challenges and contributions of practical theology in our own time and world, hosted by Andrew Rogers and Nicola Slee.  This event marks the publication of Celebrating the Past, Present and Future of British and Irish Practical Theology by Routledge: a gathering together of articles given at BIAPT’s 25th anniversary conference in 2019, with an additional essay on Irish practical theology.  As these articles have all (with the exception of the essay on the Irish context) been published in the journal, Practical Theology, our focus in this event will not be on the content of the articles themselves so much as on present-day challenges and opportunities for practical theology in the UK, Europe and more widely.  Our entire world context has changed dramatically since these articles were first written, and this will provide an opportunity for reflection on the changes and what resources we need to respond to them.

Many contributors to the book will be present to participate in this event, which we are confident will be a stimulating and nourishing one.

Professor Ruard Ganzevoort is Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Professor of Practical Theology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His main areas of interest in the field of religion are trauma, sexuality, conflict, identity, and popular culture. He has published or edited 27 books and more than 210 scientific or professional publications. He was president of the International Academy of Practical Theology from 2007-2009 and president of the International Society for Empirical Research in Theology from 2014-2018. Together with Prof. Nancy Ammerman and Dr. Srdjan Sremac, he is the series editor of Palgrave Studies in Lived Religion and Societal Challenges. Since June 2011, he has also been a member of the Senate in the Dutch national parliament for the Green party GroenLinks, where he is the spokesperson for Primary and Secondary Education, Defence, Home Affairs, and Kingdom Affairs.
