Broken Rites: Call for research on pastoral care for families affected by clergy divorce

Category: Job opportunities

Date: October 18, 2021

Broken Rites (, an organisation that supports and advocates for spouses and families in the aftermath of the breakdown of a clergy marriage, is seeking to fund a discrete piece of research into the pastoral care of such families.

It has been observed that the impact of clergy divorce has unique characteristics. Not only do spouses and children lose their home, community and source of income, but a divorce may challenge the faith or moral compass of those impacted. It is possible that some survivors may suffer moral injury.

Suggested research parameters

  • Brief literature review on pastoral care of families affected by clergy divorce
  • Sensitive interviews with impacted families, including adult children where appropriate, on what pastoral care has and has not been helpful

A short booklet (Grove-sized) that offers pastoral care advice and resources to families impacted by clergy divorce and those who support them.

The research will be subsidised by a stipend of £6000.
